We've lost weight on the gluten free diet because you have to make everything at home. A lot of fast food and processed foods contain wheat.
I agree, due to my daughters eczema condition, we've had to follow a strict non-gluten diet, and I've lost close to thirty pounds (we've been on the diet for at least three months). Whenever I do decide to go back to eating gluten-filled foods, I immediately feel and see the difference.
